Alcor Seminar Newport Beach November 15-17, 2002

The attendance at the Alcor / Life Extension Foundation Convention in Newport Beach, Los Angeles was a pleasant surprise. The Marriott Hotel across from Fashion Island was a superb central location very near to John Wayne Airport in Orange County. The course was organized by Dr. Lemler and was well done with some of the more notorious speakers and personalities of the day.  Especially was the discussion by Dr. Drexler about nanotechnology and his hope of respirocytes substituting for blood. He also envisions and works on several other projects that will help with phagocytosis.

Everyone was anticipating Dr. Michael West’s talk with an opening statement that “ Life appears to be Immortal”.  References were made to “Star Trek” and to “Ben Casey”.  Mention was made about August Weisman, Charles Darwin, Alexis Carol and Leonard Hayflick. There was some controversy as to when LIFE begins and the consensus is that 2 weeks after fertilization is when the decision is made to “divide and carry on”.  Philosophy discussions about God making humans in his own image, cloning is engineering longevity.  Gene therapy is to grow germ cells which are telomerase positive.  Human blastocyst cells can branch off into anything human.  “This marvelous embryonic substance is eternally going….imperishable, everlasting and constant.”

“Telomerase is Benign”- Michael West Nov. 16th, 2002.  Telomerase is expressed by one gene sequence and may be simpler than we thought possible.  Telomerase may be the fuel for cell division but does not mean a run away cancerous growth.

Christine Peterson discussed the various Longevity technology available.

Steve Harris helped explain the latest in rapid cooling techniques to save the brain for cryogene.

Michael Rose entered into the discussion of biological immortality with excellent dialogue and questions.

Many other talks about the economics of cryogene were undertaken and there was a good chance for networking with the scientists and doctors involved in the fields of life extension.  We were pleased to see so many reporters and media interest from science magazines, the L.A. papers and the Globe and Mail.
